CHILD PROTECTION INQUIRY

Ms CHAPMAN (Bragg—Deputy Leader of the Opposition) (14:55): My question again is to the Premier. Given the Premier's answer in respect of the investigation being initiated by the Attorney-General's Department, did the Premier ask the Attorney-General, or his department, to provide the briefing on that investigation?

The Hon. J.W. WEATHERILL (Cheltenham—Premier, Treasurer, Minister for State Development, Minister for the Public Sector, Minister for the Arts) (14:56): There is no investigation that was being undertaken by the Attorney-General's Department, and I don't know which part of my answer allowed the member for Bragg to reach that conclusion. This is the ordinary task of gathering information to put ministers and the cabinet in a position where it is anticipated they may receive questions about a topic, and briefings are prepared about a matter and put forward. This was just one of a series of inputs into a series of matters that we anticipated may be asked in the circumstances of the release of the findings of the Debelle inquiry.
